Gullybop for Sting 2014

One great aspect of social media is its ability to showcase genuine talent, without the assistance of PR companies, and publicists. Nowadays, an individual can do something as simple as sharing a video on Youtube. From here, we have seen people go on to capture both the attention, and support of people all over the world, eventually becoming widely supported artists.

A recent example of this phenomenon is Gullybop also known as Country Man, who I had originally posted about back in December 2012, when he was recorded dropping an acoustic freestyle, whilst fixing a fan. At the time, I expressed the view that he sounded better than some of our current Dancehall 'artists,' and felt that it was a shame to see him go back to the mere task of fixing a fan. You can read the original post here, and below I have featured the original freestyle which Andre Solid, CEO of Solid Empire Productions, and myself have been commending for two years now.

As things stand today, Gullybop has put true meaning into the frequently used saying from nothing to something. Having mentioned Laing in his original freestyle, he has finally been signed up for this year's Sting stage show, and has been in the studio voicing riddims, filming videos, and doing interviews globally. As we continue to follow his journey, don't forget to check out his latest track "My God Dem Nuh Bad Like Me," which sees him getting into the Sting spirit.

I am sure it has been a very eventful time for Gullybop over these last few months, and I can hardly wait to see how he delivers his performance as Sting 2014. I personally hope that his performance will reflect a similar style to that portrayed within the freestyle above, as opposed to some of the recent material that I have been exposed to, but nonetheless, them nuh bad like him!

Jah 9 - Avacado (Official Video)

I discovered Jah 9's music through a reggae mix which I had downloaded some months ago, and was instantly drawn in by the sincerity of her music. Recognised by many after the release of her track entitled Brothers on the Honeypot Riddim, Jah 9 continues to provide us with beautiful reggae music, and some genuine food for thought.

Firstly, I encourage you to listen to the track Brothers which is featured on the much loved Honey Pot riddim, produced by Silly Walks Discotheque.

The track to follow is her most recent video release for a track entitled Avocado. In her own words, she sums up the track below.
"I am very excited to share this song and happy I was able to tell the story in my own way, honouring the light hearted nature with which it was written but still injecting important messages in a more universally appealing way. Avocado is that spoon full of sugar to make the medicine go down”

Konshens - Caribbean Party (Official Video)

What I love most about this video is that it captures something about Caribbean culture that I really love. From just a few messages via social networking, people came out in their numbers to support the Subkonshus team in the making of this video. As is evident, people came together to hold a good vibe, and essentially enjoy a real Caribbean party.

Good Book Riddim

Easily one of my favourite riddims of 2014, Good Book is one of those infectious riddims that I have not been able to get out of my head from the very first listen. Produced by H20 Records, this one has rightfully seen heavy rotation on the Dancehall circuit. These days it isn't very often that I like every piece on a riddim, but I cannot seem to fault any of tracks that have been voiced on this one. To pay homage to a riddim that I love so much, I have featured the official videos from Demarco, Konshens, and Delly Ranx's pieces on the riddim below.

A Special Delivery From Javada

Some of you may recognise Javada from his numerous appearances, both on and off stage, alongside Subkonshus Music CEO Konshens. By means of introduction, he is an artist hailing from the Subkonshus team, who has recently provided us with a special delivery of his own.

This special delivery comes in the form of his debut mixtape, Rude & Smooth, which gives us an insight into what we can expect from Javada as an artist, whilst revealing the jovial side of his character. Often providing nothing but music and laughter, he is definitely one to follow Instagram (@javadasubk), and an artist that I am sure we will continue to hear him from in the near future.

Check out the latest video from Javada, for a track entitled Anything You Want which is also featured on the Rude & Smooth mixtape.

Tarrus Riley - Love Situation Tour, UK

Tarrus Riley, the man who brought us Reggae hits such as She's Royal, is about to embark on his first headline tour in the UK. Having previously toured the country on shows alongside the likes of Beres Hammond, this tour will see Tarrus backed by his very own Blaksoil Band, and legendary saxophonist Dean Fraser. Without a doubt, this is set to be a series of very special shows.

Having released the latest album Love Situation earlier this year, Tarrus has once again shown us why he still remains as one of the most loved Reggae singers of our time. With a song on the album for everyone, Mr Riley sings us through a number of love situations, varying between the classic one drop sounds of reggae, and the acoustic style that he executed so well on the last album.

Spreading conciousness, and love wherever he travels, the 'Singy Singy' will be continuing his search for that dream woman as he takes to the stage in Manchester, Bristol, Birmingham, and London in the next couple of weeks.

Whilst Tarrus may be the headline act, it has to be noted that the promoters have done an exceptional job with this tour, preserving quality in every aspect of the shows, down to supporting acts Alaine, and on the London date at The Forum, the UK's very own Randy Valentine.

Whilst Alaine has continued to caress us with her sweet tone over the years, Randy Valentine has been working consistently, and is bound to bring something special to the show. With several European tours under his belt, and the recently released Break The Chain EP, it is amazing to finally see hard work paying off.

With what Randy Valentine may call a certified line up, tickets for these shows can be purchased via Ticketmaster, or alternatively you can visit the official website of the tour.

Clay - Shadow After Dark (Official Video)

A new track and video from Clay who brought us the Back To Roots Volume 1 mixtape. Bringing more conciousness, reality, and a nice Reggae vibe, I am convinced that this song alone will make somebody go and pre-order the forthcoming EP. I honestly cannot wait to hear the EP in full, but if this is anything to go by, it is surely worth the wait.

Toddla T Takeover with Ward 21, Stylo G, & More - XOYO, London

From my very first glance at this flyer, it was evident that Toddla T was not cutting corners with this line up. Bringing real Dancehall to London, Toddla T's Takeover will see some of my all-time favourite producers, Ward 21, performing live alongside London's very own soundbwoy Stylo G.

If you know your Dancehall, you will know that these guys are the masterminds behind some of the riddims that probably sit in your top 10 list of classic Dancehall riddims to date. So let’s party to some of our favourite Dancehall riddims, and bring the weekend in the right way as Toddla T takes over London's XOYO on Friday 18th July.

This night is one that you do not want to miss, so purchase your tickets online if you have not done so already. Last entry is 11.30pm sharp.

Bitty McLean Live in London - June 2014

Having released his latest album The Taxi Sessions towards the end of last year, Bitty McLean has certainly reminded us of why he is still one of the greatest Reggae artists to emerge out of the UK. With The Taxi Sessions having created an even bigger buzz around this household name, Bitty has continued to tour worldwide performing in Japan, Australia, and Finland to name just a few. As is evident from The Taxi Sessions, the singer is still very much at the top of his game, and is continuing to produce more and more of the sweet Reggae music that we love and enjoy.

So on Saturday 7th June, Bitty is set to grace the Jazz Cafe stage once again, performing tracks from The Taxi Sessions album, alongside a number of his classics. Fresh from the Ruhr Reggae Festival in Germany, Bitty is guaranteed to have us cruising through the night.

As we count down the days, I shall leave you in the safe hands of Bitty himself with one of my all time favourites from the phenomenal On Bond Street KGN. JA. album.

Tickets for this night start from £22.50 (inclusive of the booking fee) and can be purchased from the Ticketmaster website, or at the Jazz Cafe Box Office. See you there.

Randy Valentine "Break The Chain" EP Launch

It's not very often that we get to see so much homegrown talent on the same stage, so on Sunday 4th May 2014, you are invited to come down to Scandal's Bar to celebrate the launch of Randy Valentine's forthcoming EP Break The Chain, and enjoy a Reggae showcase on behalf of Hemp Higher, JOAT, and Buju Original Entertainment.

The event itself is dedicated to the launch of Randy Valentine's new EP which he will be taking you on a journey through on the night, but the entertainment does not stop there. The Break The Chain EP launch also features live performances from Gappy Ranks, Clay, Maddy Carty, and Tasonia, alongside live DJs who will ensure that you are never short of entertainment from start to finish.

In addition to this, the night will be dedicated to Rejuvenate Jamaica Hospitals, a charity which aims to improve the experience of patients and visitors to public hospitals in Jamaica.

So why not enjoy your Bank Holiday Sunday witnessing an array of amazing talent, supporting a good cause, and supporting good Reggae music. Even if you aren't up-to-date with the RVlution, it would be a great opportunity for you to find out what the movement is all about, or to simply just enjoy an extra special night out taking place south of the river.

For tickets, you can purchase online at, or alternatively, you can contact 07939175452 or 07958285305.

Look forward to seeing you all there!

Popcaan Mashup - Lucas DiPasquale

Whilst the majority were out partying over the Easter weekend, I was in my house holding a mellow vibe to the likes of this video which has recently been taking the social media platforms by storm. Whilst it's not out of the ordinary to find this sort of acoustic cover hiding somewhere on Youtube, there is something very special about the way Lucas DiPasquale deals with the Dancehall.

Hopefully, there will be more to come but until then do enjoy this fresh new twist on a few of our favourite Popcaan hits.

Tarrus Riley - Dem A Watch (Official Video)

Without a doubt, this is my favourite track off the recently released Love Situation album, and I am extremely happy that they have decided to give us a visual for this one. Words can't really express my love for this track, but the amount of times that I listen to it on a daily basis surely could. Hopefully one day I will catch Tarrus singing this one live, but until then I'll have to be content with the video.

Clay - Back To Roots Volume 1 - Mixtape Review

Reggae music is very much alive, and this piece is dedicated to celebrating just that.  A few months back, I discovered a mixtape which has not only supplied me with great listening pleasure, but one that has also caused me to reflect. This mixtape entitled Back To Roots Volume 1 is brought to us by a very competent musician going by the name of Clay, and is one that you simply cannot afford to leave out of your music collection.

Already withholding an impressive list of musical accomplishments, some may say that the release of Clay’s debut mixtape was well overdue, but the most important thing is that it has arrived.  With this mixtape, I was initially lured in by Clay’s sweet and mellow vocals with his rendition of a classic Bob Marley hit. However as I continued to listen, the originality and uniqueness of this artist’s talent became more and more evident. With my only criticism of the mixtape being that it isn’t long enough, it would be safe to conclude that I am now a supporter of the Clay movement, and cannot wait to see what he has in store for us next. For now, check out the video to Trodding which you will find featured on the mixtape.

Having released a compilation of such quality as his debut mixtape, I can firmly say that his aspirations of becoming an icon within the music industry are very much within his capabilities, and we definitely look forward to more and more of Clay in 2014.

Christopher Ellis - Better Than Love EP - Review

November 2013 saw the release of Christopher Ellis’ debut EP entitled Better Than Love. It would be an understatement to refer to the release as ‘long awaited,’ because there is no denying that this compilation was heavily sought for by people worldwide for a very long time. If the first single from the EP which was too entitled Better Than Love was anything to go by, we knew that we were in for a real treat.

On this EP, we see Christopher exhibit his talents on riddims produced by none other than Damian ‘Jr. Gong’ Marley. With the release coming from the Ghetto Youths International camp, we did expect an EP which spoke volumes in terms of quality, but never really knew what to expect musically, as a result of some of Christopher’s most recent releases. Having already breached any boundaries that we may have had in place for the singer, this EP has seen Christopher return to the traditional reggae and rocksteady sound that we first associated him with. The riddims themselves encompass a much more classic reggae sound, as a result of the authenticity in the way in which they were recorded. In accordance with this, this 5 track EP seems to emphasise the natural essence of Christopher Ellis’ vocals that we have fallen in love with over the years, all through the means of his very own songwriting.

Commenting on his debut EP, Ellis has added that he is very pleased with the final outcome, as well as the support which he has received for it over the last few months. In fact, the support has been so tremendous that it has seen the EP topping iTunes charts in various parts of the World. On top of this, he has added that the EP’s fundamental purpose is not for financial profit, but is for the love of music and the convenience of his supporters. Available for purchase across a number of platforms, this EP is one that can be said to be ‘easy on the pocket,’ and a significant mark in Christopher’s musical journey thus far. I personally still can’t wait for the debut album, but if I do know anything about this artist, it is that quality will always outweigh quantity, as is reflected in his releases to date.

The EP Better Than Love is now available for purchase from iTunes if you have not already obtained your copy.

Lea-Anna - Take Control - Mixtape Review

Having gone quiet for a number of months and leaving us with not much more than kisses for breakfast early in the morning, Lea-Anna dropped her debut mixtape Take Control in the latter part of 2013 as the year drew to a close.

Whilst this artist has previously introduced us to her sound with a few tracks, Take Control is the first real compilation of tracks that really showcases what this young lady is all about. Over the 18 tracks of this EP, I feel that Lea-Anna manages to reveal a very sassy and creative side that can adapt to a number of genres, but one that the listeners have not had the chance to become acquainted with just yet. Exhibiting this style over some very familiar, well-loved riddims courtesy of Wundah, this mixtape has proved to be an eye-opener for some, but for many, a reminder to keep a close eye on this lady.

It has to be said that one of my favourite aspects of this project was seeing Lea-Anna stepping out of the Dancehall genre and exploring more, which has most certainly added to the creative flair of this mixtape. In fact, this seems to insinuate that future projects from Lea-Anna may very well entail other genres, but only time will tell.  I guess until then, we will have to stay tuned to see what moves she makes next as she continues to take control.
